“Take up and read.” Augustine, Confessions 8.12
About Word Study
Word Study is a free place to read the Bible in Greek and Hebrew, one word at a time. Click any word to see its lexical form, its parsing, what the lexicons say about it, and everywhere else it appears.
Open Word StudyWhat you can do
- Read the Berean Standard Bible, the King James Version, the Greek New Testament, the Hebrew Bible, or an interlinear, side by side in panels you arrange.
- Look up any word in Liddell–Scott–Jones, Abbott-Smith, Brown–Driver–Briggs or Strong’s, with its parsing and morphemes.
- Study a word’s use: every occurrence, how it is translated, and where it clusters, book by book.
- Keep a study for a sermon, a lesson or a paper. A study holds its passages, notes, highlights and the passages you collect, a board for connecting them, and a bibliography you can export.
- Read beside the text: church fathers, Jewish commentators, cross references, and people and places.
Free and open
There is no account to make, no advertising and no tracking. Everything Word Study shows is in the public domain or openly licensed (CC BY or CC BY-SA). Each source is credited in the app: open the Library and choose Sources and licenses. Where Word Study corrected an error in a source, it says so there, and the error is reported to the people who maintain it.
The Greek “Critical text” follows the readings of the Nestle-Aland 28th edition as STEPBible records them. It is not the Nestle-Aland text itself, which is copyrighted. The Hebrew is the Leningrad Codex, as edited in the Westminster Leningrad Codex.
Your work stays with you
Your studies, notes and highlights are saved in your browser, on your device. They are not sent anywhere. Because of that, clearing your browser’s data clears them too, so make a backup now and then: in the app, open Settings and choose Back up everything. A backup file restores in any browser.
When something breaks, the page sends a short error report (the error, the page address and the browser’s name) so it can be fixed. Your notes are never part of it.
Feedback and corrections
Found a wrong parsing, a misplaced link or a typo? Have an idea? Write to feedback@wordstudy.org.
In the app, right-click a word or a verse number and choose Report a problem: the email starts with the passage and the word filled in.
Who makes it
Word Study is made by Will, a seminary librarian, as a free resource for students, pastors, teachers and anyone else who wants to read the Scriptures closely in their original languages.
